Joining The Navy Reserve
Today’s Army is comprised of six branches of the Service, each with active-duty and part-time components. Part-time duties include five reserve components and two guards. Locations, missions, and service engagements vary greatly, although they are all on the same rank-based pay scale.
Active duty members are full-time members of the Army, live on base or in military housing, and are immersed in military culture. After attending boot camp, they are usually stationed at a base at home or abroad for a period that usually lasts two to six years. During this time, they can also explore advanced training opportunities to further develop practical and technical skills. If service members are deployed, the time away varies depending on the unit’s specific mission.
Reserves were created to provide and maintain trained units at home while active duty members were deployed. With the exception of the Space Force, each branch of the military has a Reserve component under its command, which is available for deployment to active duty in times of war or national emergency.
Reservists are part-time service members, giving them time to pursue a civilian career or college education while serving their country. Reserve members attend boot camp and are required to participate in training exercises one weekend a month, as well as a two-week program each year. Reservists can be used to serve alongside active duty members for special missions.

Corporal Amayah Littlewolf, US Army National Guard: In the Army National Guard we serve part-time, which is very helpful because I can finish my classes and also work when I have to work. I drill one weekend a month and then two weeks in the summer. We have time in the classroom and then we have time that we spend working on the trucks, making sure they can go, seeing if they need any maintenance. We had to work hard during the training weekend but it was fun. Nice to see people in my unit on their civilian side. They all have different jobs, there are policemen, nurses. There are many different types of people.
Wenona Littlewolf: I’m so happy that she gets to keep the things she loves and most of all work toward her degree and then keep her military side, running at the same time. It’s amazing that he can do it so well. In our spiritual paths, we always talk about living the good life. I think he did a good job living that good life.
Amayah: So my major is biochemistry, even though it sounds very specific, you can do a lot with it. I feel like I have a purpose in helping people, whether it’s in healthcare admin or actually being a provider, that’s what I’m passionate about. The purpose of being a soldier is to serve your country. Everything you do is for your community and your country, so I think they go hand in hand with helping people.

F1: I am a senior information systems technician in the Navy Reserve. On the private side, I am a cyber security engineer.
M2: I am an anesthesiologist at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego here, not only as a member of the United States Navy but also as a civilian physician.

M1: If for some reason they need additional staff in a certain area, they will call for volunteers.
M3: So if we have to change personnel suddenly to one conflict or another, or one guard post to another, they can pull from there as a back bench.

M1: Once they finish that, they actually go back to their home of record, and then their Reserve time starts.

The National Guard consists of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Each state and territory of the United States, as well as the District of Columbia, has its own Guard units, which operate distinctly and separately from the others. Each National Guard group uses the name of its state (for example, the New York National Guard) and reports to the governor of that state.
Things To Consider When Choosing Active Vs. Reserve Duty
The Garda’s focus is on national security and humanitarian aid. In addition to training exercises one weekend a month and two full weeks a year, National Guard units assist communities in their states during emergencies such as storms, floods, fires and other natural disasters.
During a conflict, the president can mobilize the National Guard and its service members can be stationed overseas. National Guard members stationed overseas may see combat, but are also assigned non-combat humanitarian tasks, such as building schools and hospitals, training local peacekeepers, and other community-building projects.
The Army, Army National Guard, and Coast Guard offer split training options. High school students (and college and vocational students in the case of the Coast Guard) can train for two summers and serve one weekend a month during the school year.
