The purpose of today’s presentation is to provide an overview of your TRICARE dental benefits.

Today we’ll discuss how to update your information in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, and how to get dental benefits through the Active Duty Dental Program, the TRICARE Dental Program, and the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program. Let’s review foreign dental treatment options. Finally, we will discuss the difference between medical and non-medical dental services and provide contact information for additional questions.

4 Keep DEERS Informed After registering with DEERS, be sure to update addresses and other contact information for all family members. Keeping your DEERS information, especially your address, current is important to ensure that you and your family have uninterrupted TRICARE coverage. Although only a sponsor can add family members to DEERS, both the sponsor and family members over the age of 18 can update contact information. Whenever there is a change in marital status (marriage, birth, adoption, divorce, death, etc.), the sponsor must update DEERS. Update your information immediately when changes occur, whether you’re on active duty at the time or not. You can update your DEERS information online, by phone, mail, or fax. Update your information online through the listed milConnect website. MilConnect is the Defense Manpower Data Center’s web portal that provides access to your information in DEERS. Enrolling children in DEERS quickly can minimize delays or problems with coverage and claims processing.

Active duty members, including members of the National Guard and Reserve, who are called or ordered to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days are automatically eligible for TRICARE dental benefits. If you live or work within 50 miles of a military dental facility or DTF, you should seek assistance from a military dentist. To find a dentist, visit your base website or ask your management unit. The Active Duty Dental Program, or ADDP, provides civilian dental care to service members who cannot get the care they need from a military dental clinic. ADDP is available in the United States and US territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands). ADDP, operated by United Concordia Companies, Inc. (United Concordia), available to service members who: Receive referrals from military DTFs or live and work with a military DTF more than 50 miles from base. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are correctly coded as “Remote” in DEERS when applicable. You must work with your unit to make changes to DEERS. Note: If you live or work within 50 miles of a military DTF and seek civilian dental care without a referral, you may be responsible for the entire bill. Also, if you live remotely, you must have an appointment control number, or ACN, to make an appointment. Next, let’s talk about ACNs.

You need a United Concordia ACN to receive care through ADDP. If you are referred by a military dentist, they must send you a referral request confirmation in ACN. The number is only valid for the service listed on the referral confirmation, so be sure to get a new referral if you need additional services. Remember that no matter where you live, private dental care is not allowed unless United Concordia offers an ACN, except for dental emergencies. If you live in a remote location, you can complete an online appointment control number request form to obtain an appointment control number. The form is available on the ADDP website. If you have an ACN, there are three ways to make appointments through ADDP: If you have a military dentist, you can ask them to make an appointment for you. You can contact an ADDP dental locator to schedule an appointment for you. Or you can make an appointment yourself. To make your own appointment, enter a dentist in your network by quoting your appointment reference number on the application form. You must select an in-network dentist that is a dentist contracted with United Concordia to provide services at agreed upon rates. A list of network dentists can be found on the ADDP website. Note: Activated Reserve members who are at the beginning of their enlistment period and who live within 50 miles of the DTF can still receive dental care from a civilian dentist using the ACN. No need to go DTF first.

Eligible beneficiaries can enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program, or TDP, a voluntary, premium-based DoD program. Reimbursement is handled by United Concordia. The program is available. Active Duty Family Members Selected Reserve and Individual Readiness Reserve members and their families Transitional Survivors Survivor Family Members The program is available in both CONUS and OCONUS locations. The TDP CONUS service area includes the 50 US, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. TDP OCONUS service area includes areas outside the CONUS service area and covered services performed on a vessel or vessels outside the territorial waters of the CONUS service area. Command sponsorship is not required for OCONUS coverage, but costs are higher for OCONUS enrollees who are not sponsored by a command.

You can use a credit card to pay the surcharge. Or, if you’re signing up by mail, you can send the first month’s premium by personal check, cashier’s check, traveler’s check, money order, or credit card. The monthly premium covers the following month’s dental care. The minimum registration period for most beneficiaries is 12 months. Exceptions are: Beneficiaries who lose legal capacity. Participants stationed at OCONUS or in a military dental facility with sufficient space, National Guard and Reserve members who have been called or ordered to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days Note: Members of the National Guard or Reserve are enrolled TDPs are excluded if they have been called or ordered to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days. After deactivation, you will be automatically registered again. Family members remain enrolled and pay a reduced premium if the sponsor is in active employment.

The chart shows some of your cost sharing for services received while you have TDP coverage. Note: For more information about services covered by the TDP, visit Benefits and then What’s Covered. for details. A cost share is a percentage of the allowable fee that you pay for covered services. For example, if United Concordia’s allowance for filling a base in the US was $100, you would be responsible for 20 percent of that amount, or $20. Note: Cost sharing is determined not by the dentist’s fee, but by the amount agreed to by United Concordia. When you use an in-network dentist, TDP pays the full amount for preventive and diagnostic services, which generally include your two checkups and cleanings in a 12-month period.
