UTICA, NY – Two of the new faces of the New York National Guard arrived at their first training unit this year with a unique addition to their uniforms: the Ranger tab.

Pfcs. Jason Chun, 20, of Syracuse, and Brandon Snyder, 23, of Livonia, N.Y., completed the rigorous 61-day Ranger course before joining the Utica-based 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment, N.Y., part of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The Ranger school emphasizes close combat and direct fire. Training focuses on tactics and small unit leadership. Candidates perform ambush and reconnaissance missions in three phases, including mountain and swamp mission environments.

“The Ranger course is the ultimate leadership school,” said Capt. James Sturges, commander of Alpha Company at the National Guard Warrior Training Center at Fort Benning, Georgia.

They get there through the Ranger Leader Initiative, or RTLI for short. New Soldiers who excel in training will be identified and given the opportunity to enter Ranger School directly from their unique training course.

Neither of them knew that opportunity would come their way during their first year of military service.

Connections, Challenges Push Faith Graduates Through Brutal Army Ranger School

“It was a complete surprise to me,” Snyder said. I never thought I would get this opportunity.”

“I have wanted to go to Ranger School since I was in high school,” Chun said in December 2019 upon graduating. “It’s a challenge. It’s the ability to find out who you really are and what you’re really made of.”

Snyder, who graduated in August 2020, agreed that as a recruit, Ranger School was the highest training goal he had.

“I dreamed of going to Ranger School and I remember asking my recruiter about it,” he said.

“I understand that you have no sleep and no food,” Chun said. I wanted to put myself in that situation to see who I really was. And I learned a lot of lessons.” .

The RTLI program searches for candidates at Fort Benning, Georgia and identifies the most potential National Guard Soldiers who will succeed in the Ranger Course.

“I didn’t even know about the program until the day the staff told me they were giving me the opportunity to fast for another eight weeks,” Snyder said of his choice.

Lieutenant Gabriel Musser, Senior RTLI Officer. The process begins the day participants receive basic training, he said, providing an overview of Ranger School.

“We went there and said ‘This is what we’re specifically looking for,’” Musser said. “Once we narrow it down, we want to talk to those 10 or 15 kids.”

First Women To Complete Army Ranger Course Speak Out

They then consult with drill sergeants to identify and research which National Guard soldiers might be good candidates.

“As soon as he offered me, I knew I had to do everything I had and give it 100 percent,” he said.

“By sending young Guardsmen, we are developing the future of the National Guard,” Sturges said. “When they return to their units, you will have young, capable leaders who can impact things at their level.”

Training qualified rangers early in a military career can boost a soldier’s advancement prospects and help develop and retain excellent NCOs, Musser explained.

How To Get Into Ranger School

The 30-day course prepares Guard members for the National Guard’s “pre-ranger” course, called the Ranger Training Evaluation Course.

“RTLI was one of the steps that got me to the point where I was able to successfully complete Ranger School,” Chun said. “It’s the building block. It’s the foundation, the foundation.”

“RTLI taught me how to be a Ranger,” he said. “How to do Ranger push-ups. How to do everything the right way. So that was a great help,” Chun said.

Snyder agrees that the training and preparation at the Warrior Training Center prepared him for success in the course.

“I have nothing but good things to say about the Warrior Training Center at Fort Benning,” Snyder said.

Col. Michael A. Scarpulla, commander of the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade at Fort Benning explained that sending a new soldier to Ranger School is not typical.

“It is unusual for a soldier to go straight from his initial training in the Army to Ranger School,” Scarpulla said.

“Soldiers typically spend about a year or two with their unit and gain practical experience as members of the fire department and the like,” he said.

Snyder said he knows his experience is unique and he wants to pass it on to other recruits and his fellow Soldiers in the unit.

After returning to the New York National Guard for training in September, Snyder spoke with other infantry recruits to prepare them for the occasion.

“Train and work hard and anything is possible,” he said. “If I know exactly what to do going in, I will be better prepared and hopefully be able to convey that to others.

“I’m really happy to be an average Joe,” Chun said of training with his company and sharing his lessons and experiences as a Ranger with his teammates. “I wear this brand with pride,” he said.

Junior Soldier Defies All Odds To Graduate Ranger School

Snyder said his Ranger qualifications bring high expectations of performance, even at such a junior level. He started training with his company in October.

“I realized that being that leader has a lot of weight and a lot of expectations because I went to Ranger School,” he said.

“But I was ready, and if Ranger school taught me anything, it taught me humility and resilience. within units, the Army allows women to participate in training programs for soldiers who wish to become infantry commanders.
