A Border Patrol Agent (BPA) is a law enforcement officer who enforces federal laws when people or goods travel into the United States. They operate along the borders of Mexico and Canada as well as the coastal waters of Puerto Rico and Florida to facilitate the flow of legal trade. Border Patrol agents are also responsible for preventing illegal immigration and protecting Americans from human trafficking, drug trafficking, terrorism, and agricultural pests. Border Patrol agents work for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In addition to other exciting career opportunities, including supervisory positions, outstanding agents can enjoy career advancement opportunities such as being assigned to the Elite Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), Mounted Patrol, K-9 Units, or Riverside Operations.
Agents use a variety of technological tools such as infrared scopes, electronic sensors, low-light television systems and aircraft to carry out their missions. They are also involved in the legal field as they provide information to the courts on immigration matters such as citizenship applications. Border Patrol agents often deal with dangerous situations such as coming into contact with armed criminals. A BPA is similar to a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBP Officer or CBPO) and may overlap some duties, but the basic duties are different. Border Patrol agents typically patrol borders and entry points to arrest undocumented aliens and foreign smugglers, while CBP agents facilitate the flow of legal trade and travel, determine whether individuals are allowed into the United States, and focus on preventing illegal entry. Personal and prohibited items.
