You can earn a commission in the US Army through one of four programs: the US Academy, the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, Officer Candidate School, or direct appointment. All applicants must be high school graduates, pass a medical and physical exam and be at least 17 years old.
How To Become A Commissioned Officer In The Marines
The U.S. Academy at West Point, N.Y., offers bachelor’s degrees in engineering and liberal arts. Graduates receive commissions as second lieutenants in the Army. Admission is very competitive. Appointments are usually made through the recommendations of US senators and representatives. Applicants should begin seeking admission to the Academy no later than the middle of their junior year in high school.
Marine Corps Officer Ranks
Army ROTC is the primary source of college-trained officers for the Army. ROTC is offered today at more than 300 institutions and through contracts at more than 1,000 colleges and universities.
Army ROTC consists of two parts – Basic Course and Advanced Course. Basic courses cover the freshman and sophomore years of college. Students can withdraw at any time without obligation. Selected students may enroll in advanced courses during the final two years of college. Students in advanced courses get uniforms, required textbooks and subsistence allowance. Cadets are scheduled for a six-week advanced camp during the summer between their junior and senior years.
Tuition assistance in the form of competitive scholarships is available for two, three or four years with different amounts each year. Additional scholarship benefits include earmarked allowances for textbooks and materials.
Officer Candidate School is a 14-week course that trains enlisted personnel, warrant officers, and bachelor’s degree civilians to become military officers. Soldiers and warrant officers must have 90 semester credit hours before applying. Civilian applicants must have a bachelor’s degree. The Officer Candidate School (OCS) currently recruits nearly 1,000 officers annually, comparable to 900 academies.

Military Warrant Officers must demonstrate leadership skills and possess a desire and commitment to perfect their technical expertise through professional development, training and education. Through school, experience, assignments, and promotions, they learn to perform effectively in the most demanding positions.
