UTICA, N.Y. – Two of the new faces in the New York National Guard arrived at their first unit training this year with a unique addition to their uniforms: the Ranger tab.
Pfcs. Jason Chun, 20, of Syracuse, and Brandon Snyder, 23, of Livonia, New York, both graduated from 61 days of Ranger school before joining the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment, based in Utica, N.Y., a part of the 27th Infantry Brigade. The battle team.

Ranger school emphasizes hand-to-hand combat and direct fire. Training focuses on small unit tactics and leadership. Candidates conduct ambush and reconnaissance missions in three phases, including mountain and swamp mission environments.
“The Ranger Course is the ultimate leadership school,” according to Capt. James Sturges, commander of Alpha Company at the National Guard Warrior Training Center in Fort Benning, Georgia.
They got there through the Ranger Team Leader Initiative, or RTLI for short. Young soldiers who excel in training are identified and given the chance to tackle Ranger School right after their One Station unit training.
Both had no idea that the opportunity would present itself in their first year of military service.

“It was absolutely a surprise to me. I never thought I would have this opportunity,” Snyder said.
“I’ve wanted to go to Ranger School since I was in high school,” Chun said in December 2019 at graduation. “It was the challenge. It was the ability to find who you really are and what you’re really made of.”
Snyder, who graduated in August 2020, agrees that as a new recruit, Ranger School was the highest training goal he had.
“It was kind of my dream to go to Ranger School and I remember asking my recruiter about it,” he said.

The RTLI program screens applicants at Fort Benning, Georgia and identifies the best National Guard Soldiers to succeed in the Ranger Course.
“I didn’t even know about the program until the day the staff said they were giving me the chance to starve for another eight weeks,” Snyder said of his choice.

Lieutenant Gabriel Musser, RTLI Officer in Charge. The process begins the day trainees arrive for basic training, providing an overview of Ranger School, he said.
“They go in there and we say, ‘This is what we’re looking for, specifically,'” Musser said. “Once we’ve narrowed that down, we’d love to talk to those 10 or 15 kids.”

They consult with drill sergeants later in the course to identify and learn which National Guard soldiers might be good candidates.
“As soon as he offered it to me, I knew I had to go after it with everything I had and give it 100 percent,” he said.
“By deploying new Guardsmen, we are building the future of the National Guard,” Sturges said. “When they go back to their units, you have new, competent leaders who can affect things at their level.”
Ranger qualification early in a military career can strengthen Soldiers’ advancement prospects and help develop and retain outstanding NCOs, Musser explained.

The 30-day course prepares enlisted Guard members for the National Guard’s “pre-Ranger” course, called the Ranger Training Assessment Course.
“RTLI was one of the stepping stones to get me to a level where I could successfully complete Ranger School,” Chun said. “It was a building block. It was a foundation, a foundation.”
“RTLI taught me how to be a Ranger,” he said. “How to push with the Ranger. How to do everything the right way. It was very helpful,” Chun said.

Sending a young soldier to Ranger School is not the norm, explained Col. Michael A. Scarpulla, commander of the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade at Fort Benning.
“It’s not common for a soldier to go straight from basic training to Ranger school,” Scarpulla said.
“Soldiers normally spend about a year or two in their unit and get hands-on experience as members of a fire team and whatnot,” he said.

Snyder said he knows his experience is unique and wants to share his experience with other recruits and Soldiers in his ranks.
After returning to the New York National Guard for training in September, Snyder spoke with other infantry recruits to prepare them for the opportunity.
“Show up to practice and work hard and anything is possible,” he said. “If I knew exactly what to shoot for, I’d be better prepared, and that’s what I hope I can pass on to others.”
“I really enjoy being an average Joe,” Chun said, training with his company and sharing lessons and experiences as a Ranger with his fellow Soldiers. “I keep tabs with pride,” he said.

Snyder said his Ranger designation brings high expectations for performance, even at such a young level. He begins training with his company in October.
“I understand that it comes with a lot of weight and a lot of expectations, to be that leader, because I went to Ranger School,” he said.
“But I’m ready, and if Ranger School has taught me anything, it’s taught me to be humble and resilient.” 2 / 2 Show Title + Hide Title – Spc.
