I became a full-time delivery driver in early 2018, starting with Uber Eats and eventually adding Doordash, Grubhub, Postmates, and many smaller platforms.

Uber Driver Requirements: 4 Things To Know

Here’s what Uber Eats is: They can be great and terrible at the same time. I love the flexibility. Delivering to them can be a great way to earn some money in your spare time. For some of us, it’s part of a full-time lifestyle.

When I started, Uber Eats was just opening its wings for delivery. Uber is known for its rideshare service, and multiple deliveries have been another option for ride-hailing drivers between trips.

Since then, more and more Uber contractors have decided that it’s easier and sometimes more profitable to transport food and goods than people, making deliveries exclusively.

There are many ways to earn money with Uber Eats. But do they have good opportunities? We will discuss.

How To Become An Uber Driver: A Beginner’s Guide

It’s impossible to cover everything about delivery for Uber Eats in one comprehensive article. That is why I have created a series of articles that cover these topics in more detail. I will post these in-depth articles and you can find the full list of articles at the end of this post.

So you can start with an overview of each topic, and if you want more information about any part of Uber Eats delivery, you can read an in-depth post on that topic.

Note that this article is primarily about becoming an Uber Eats delivery driver in the United States. Other countries may have different practices for contractors. You’ll notice that I sometimes call them Uber Eats and sometimes Uber. This is because Uber is a corporate name and Uber Eats is a delivery product offered by Uber.

Here are the topics we cover on this page (and a series of related articles):

How To: What To Know Before You Become An Uber Driver

How much Uber Eats drivers earn varies. That’s because drivers are independent contractors, not employees. As independent contractors, there is no hourly rate or salary. Uber Eats drivers don’t get paid overtime.

Instead, payment is made upon delivery. What you can find for delivery includes:

There will always be a base payment. Uber Eats can charge $2.50 for delivery. However, this is not always consistent. Additional travel charges, incentives or customer tips may or may not be included in the base fare.

Because couriers are not employees, there are no Uber Eats wages or Uber Eats fees. In return, drivers can pay for their services via weekly direct deposit into a bank account, daily withdrawals via Instant Pay, or automatic payment to an Uber-issued debit card via Go Bank.

Daily, weekly and monthly gross income and hourly rates can vary greatly. This depends on several factors, such as how many deliveries are made per hour, how busy the market is, and which deliveries drivers accept or reject.

Some say they make more than $25 an hour. Others claim it is well below the federal minimum wage after car expenses. From what I’ve seen, there are plenty on both ends of the spectrum.

Simply put, Uber Eats contracts with us as a business, not as an employee. This means that Uber Eats contractors are self-employed.

As an Uber Eats gig worker, you do not receive employee or wage protections such as minimum wage, overtime or FMLA leave. Benefits such as workers comp, health insurance, vacation pay, and unemployment insurance are not covered by Uber Eats. Business expenses are not reimbursed.

On the other hand, you can be your own boss. You are not just a food provider. You are legally and technically the owner of the business. Therefore, you can set your own schedule and choose whether you want to do it as a full-time job or only as a part-time job.

Uber cannot monitor your performance as you do with employees. They cannot tell you when and where they should work. Nor can they tell you which delivery to take.

The idea here is that Uber Eats is now your customer, not your boss. Delivery quotes are now quotes for your services, not tasks. The good news is that you have more control over your income. The bad news is that you don’t have the safety net that employment offers.

If you are delivering by scooter, your scooter engine must be under 50cc. In areas where bicycle or foot delivery is possible, couriers may be 18 years of age and only need a government-issued ID.

How Uber Makes Money Now

Interestingly, Uber claims they contract with “entrepreneurs,” but the qualifications are personal. It’s none of your business here.

The key here is that Uber can’t be strict with the “hiring” process because you’re not being hired as an employee. The good news for prospective drivers is that meeting these requirements is not difficult.

They basically screen drivers through the Uber Eats background check. Last I knew, they run checks through a company called Checkr. Generally, they look for criminal convictions or issues with your driving record.

If you have a clean record, have a qualified vehicle, and are available for drivers in your market, your chances of delivering for Uber Eats are pretty good.
