How To Become Scrum Certified – Confused by the Agile and Scrum certifications and Agile training courses available today? Wondering what will happen?
What is the best proofreading for beginners? This is a frequently asked question by those new to Agile and Scrum. It doesn’t help that the names of the various Scrum and Agile certifications and the certification associations are very similar. Anyone new to Agile training can be confused.
How To Become Scrum Certified
There are many benefits to obtaining a certificate. A recent global study of more than 2,100 Scrum Masters found that those with at least an Agile certification performed better than their peers.

The reality of today’s Agile certification world is that there is a lot of money involved. Agile training and certification is a profitable business. I know it makes sense. Unfortunately, The training and certification gold rush has led many people to create new certifications and certification bodies. As Agile practices and methods become more widespread; There is an urgent need for funding for the training and accreditation process.
If you are looking for the best fast certification. Try to stick with established players that offer certification. They are the Scrum Alliance; Scrum.org and the Project Management Institute. You may also consider three other certifications listed below: Scaled Agile Academy; Large Scale Scrum and IC Agile.
Many other certification bodies have emerged, some of which are worthless. It can be confusing for the uninitiated. If you find a certificate that is not listed below, Do a quick check on the certificate authority behind the certificate to make sure it’s valid. Quick notes on evidence. First, These are entry-level certifications only. There are many other advanced certifications that I have not mentioned.
The Roles And Responsibilities Of A Scrum Master
Secondly, It is important to know that Agile is a blanket term for many methods and frameworks. Many people equate Agile and Scrum as one, but Scrum is only one type of Agile framework. There are other Agile approaches that are not part of the Scrum framework and are not covered by Scrum certification, including eXtreme Programming and Kanban. Therefore, The Scrum certification tends to get a wider focus than the broader Agile certification.
So here is my quick start guide with my recommendations for the most popular Agile and Scrum certifications.
Today there are 3 major certification bodies, each of which offers Agile Training to prepare for certification. Reliability; The following three are listed in order of age and popularity.
The Scrum Alliance is one of the oldest and most popular certifications for Scrum. In one year, established in 2002, it certified nearly one million CSMs before reporting to certificate holders.
Professional Scrum Master
Achieving CSM is really easy. You must take a 2- or 3-day training class to qualify as a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) from the Scrum Alliance. CSM courses can vary in cost depending on location and instructor. On average, Expect to pay about $1,300 per person.
After class, There are 35 online tests that are very easy to take. So CSM is very easy to find and many people including me have done exactly that.
The advantage of CSM is ease of access. Fast – sign up for a class and you become a “Certified Scrum Master” in two days.
It doesn’t mean there are too many weaknesses that are easy to find. This seems a bit inconsistent with the “recognized” persona of Scrum’s “expertise”. What will you master after the 2-day course? Another disadvantage is that the cost of the training is a bit expensive as it can only be delivered by a certified Scrum Trainer or CST. Finally, CSM certification, like all certifications from the Scrum Alliance, expires. This means you need to take more practice and more importantly, You need to pay more money to the Scrum Alliance to maintain the certification. See the related post on why I allowed my CSM to expire.
Is It Worth It To Become A Scrum Master
I discount the CSM spec because it is so simple. Still, If someone is practicing Scrum; Especially if they are in the Scrum Master role. Obtaining CSM certification shows that you care enough to earn this certification.
The Scrum Alliance offers advanced certifications for Scrum Masters as well as Product Owners, inventors We offer certifications for coaches and leaders. Although statistics can no longer be shared. They shared with me that they have 1.4 million certified members across all their certifications.
Scrum.org was founded. In 2009, Ken Schwaber was co-inventor of Scrum and co-founder of the Scrum Alliance. I won’t get into the drama here, but Schwaber left the Scrum Alliance to create a direct competitor, Scrum.org.
Scrum.org handles different certifications than the Scrum Alliance. Rather than simply asking people to take a course and earn a trophy, Scrum.org focuses on testing people to ensure they have knowledge. And they don’t care if they take the course or not.
Scrum Master Certification
By testing By that I mean knowledge of Scrum and regular review of that implementation. The assessment for the Professional Scrum Master or PSM designation is 80 questions. The evaluation costs $150 and allows you to do one trial.
You must score 85% or higher within 60 minutes to pass. Technically, This is an open book review; But there’s no time to look things up, so you need to master the content to get through.
The good news is that you don’t need to take any training from Scrum.org or anyone else. If you are already practicing Scrum or have studied the Scrum Guide or other books; You can evaluate without attending the course.
There are people who hold a PSM designation that is less than a CSM. I think PSM has been around since 2009.

The advantage of PSM is that you don’t need to take a course, so if you want to learn on your own, you can save some time and money. Another benefit is that certificates from Scrum.org never expire. Once you are certified, You don’t have to worry about paying or doing another test.
A small but downside is that PSM is less popular than CSM. This means that by 2023, more than 565,000 people will have obtained the PSM I certificate and another 31,000 will have obtained the PSM II certificate.
As with the Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org offers advanced certifications for Scrum Masters as well as Product Owners, We offer certifications for developers and leaders.
The Project Management Institute is no stranger to the recurring revenue streams created by its 760,000 Project Management Professionals (PMPs) certifications. PMI introduced the PMI Agile Certified Professional (PMI-ACP) certification in 2012. By early 2023, there will be more than 53,000 PMI-ACP credential holders.
In Demand Scrum Master Certifications 2023
PMI-ACP is slightly different from the Scrum certifications mentioned above. The content covers all things Agile rather than focusing on Scrum. Therefore, in addition to Scrum, You Kanban, Expect to know Extreme Programming and Lean software development. Scrum is the most popular agile framework, but it’s important to understand these other approaches.
Another major difference with PMI-ACP is that it requires 1,500 hours of experience in Agile methods and practices. It has been about 9 months. A challenge for those who want to add new credentials to Agile and Scrum. You cannot get PMI-ACP as a beginner.
Philosophically, There’s no point in asking someone who calls themselves “certified” to have practical experience – isn’t that the whole point of certification?
Yes, I forgot the exam. There is quite a test of 120 questions that you need to answer in 3 hours.
How To Become A Scrum Master In 2023?
To qualify for the examination; PMI requires you to complete 21 hours of training in Agile, which may be a barrier for some people, but PMI is flexible on the specific training you receive.
The advantage of PMI-ACP is that it covers a wider scope than Scrum. It is more rigorous and Project Management Institute is a recognized brand. Not having many ticket holders can be considered an advantage.
The downside is the cost and time involved in obtaining a certificate. Even with training, some syllabus is required to prepare for the exam.
Another drawback for some startups is the 1,500 hours of experience required. See my article for details on finding.
