“A certain level of volunteerism is expected in any job interview, but candidates should have a list of questions prepared in advance,” Snell said. “The worst thing you can do is pretend he doesn’t have any questions or say something like, “Um, I think we’ve covered everything.”

Job seekers who ask about position problems stand out, says Anees. Employers love candidates who want to be challenged and who want to know what it takes to be successful in this role. Anees says: “It helps me to understand their willingness to do certain jobs.

“Students have been getting grades for everything they do for years,” says Anees. “Millennials want to know where they stand, and I can appreciate that. That tells me they want to perform well and be rewarded for it.”
Training A good question to ask: Will there be training or mentoring for this role? Anees says job seekers who want to pursue professional development opportunities stand out to her.
Business job seekers who are curious about the business, strategic planning, how the company makes a difference, and if the company is growing, are “all great questions,” says Anees. “It tells me that they care about the welfare of the organization and their future.”

When the interview is nearing completion, and if the employer hasn’t covered it yet, Clark says you should always ask: What are the next steps in the interview?
“This is important so you know what to expect and when to follow up if you haven’t heard from them,” says Clark.

Why the question: This question comes from a candidate who demonstrates that they already have the “soft skills” that are typically learned and honed once on the job. Good questions will show that you have researched the position, the company and even highlight some of your strengths. “This shows the employer that you are very interested and passionate about the opportunity,” says Clark.
“I appreciate it when candidates take the last few minutes to reiterate their interest and why their skills and abilities can make an impact on the team,” says Anees. “Don’t forget to smile and shake hands.”
