To join the Army Reserves, you must be a US citizen or resident alien between the ages of 17 and 27. 17-year-olds need parental consent. You must have a high school diploma and no more than two dependents. In addition, you must take and pass the ASVAB test as well as the admissions process station medical examination.

Reserve Officer Training Corps – Hundreds of colleges and universities offer Army ROTC as an elective course for college students. Through ROTC, the Army offers merit-based scholarships in addition to a monthly living allowance. ROTC has no commitment, at least in the first year. So students are free to take the course and see if becoming an officer is right for them. Study support – Air Force Reserve offers you tuition assistance. You can be reimbursed up to $250 per semester hour or up to $166 per quarter hour for 100% tuition assistance, up to a maximum of $4,500 per year per service member. Loan Repayment Program – The Army Reserve helps Soldiers repay their student loans if they went to school with an approved Perkins, Stafford or other Department of Education guaranteed student loan. Soldiers may be eligible to repay their loan at 15% of the loan for each year of reserve service. Most 38-day-a-year jobs do not offer such benefits.

Credit by Exam – Reserve members can take advantage of free College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. You earn three transferable credits for each exam you take in a specific subject.
College Credits Earned – You can attend college and serve in the Army Reserves at the same time. Many schools offer credit for education and experience.
Training and Learning Facilities – Most Army posts have training advisors to help Soldiers identify their goals and determine how to achieve them within the Army’s continuing education system. Counseling services include academic and career planning, CLEP testing, tuition assistance, college application processing, and financial counseling.
Foreign languages – Most training centers have language labs where you can study or practice new languages. The military has language schools that offer more intensive, specialized training for those interested in jobs that require language skills.

Skills Training – The Army Reserve offers training in about 200 specialties. You don’t have to join the military full-time to benefit from skill training. The Army Reserve is full of “part-time soldiers” who are learning skills to enhance their current career or prepare for a new one.
The Army Reserve bases its promotion on a system: select, train, promote and assign. Achievement and professionalism are the criteria by which individuals meet. This person enrolls in professional development courses before being promoted and assigned to a more responsible position.
Prior Service – The prior service record of an Army Reserve recruit is the same as E-1-E-9 in the Regular Army. In many cases, if you are discharged at the level of E-6 or below, the Reserves can reenlist you at the same level.
If you are a service member looking to get a bonus, the Army Reserve may be right for you. As a pre-employee, you are encouraged to pursue advanced management positions. There is also an officer candidate school, which allows applicants to continue with civilian work during this time. The training is usually organized for one weekend and two 14-day sessions per month.

If you are an officer, your prior service experience and leadership can be leveraged in Army Reserve federal and state positions.

Obligation – As a member of the Army Reserve, your obligation is to participate in one drill per month and one annual training period per year.

Training – Training consists of two training days per month. You earn a salary for two training days per month, plus 15 days of annual tour and compensation for any additional days you may have. Your salary will also automatically adjust to the increase in the cost of living. Annual Training – With increased confidence in the Reserves, more and more units are training in other countries and performing important and exciting missions.
