What to Expect from the Military Physical Examination The Military Entrance Examination Station (MEPS) medical section supervisor describes what happens when recruits take their physical examination during MEPS. Watch video length 1:42 script published on July 30, 2021

Diane Mahalko: My name is Diane Mahalko. I am in charge of the medical department. The purpose of the medical examination is to ensure that the applicant is in good health to join the military. After they checked in with the processing, they were taken from the hall to the medical session. They check. We check their blood pressure. We tested their vision. We do a hearing test. They will be briefed to complete all their paperwork, sign their Privacy Policy Statements and sign their HIV forms. After that, they would give them an officer’s brief, a short arm, and then they would send them back to the clinic, where they would take their blood for the virus, and they would provide a urine test for drug testing. Then they looked at the doctor. Male and female tests are slightly different and basically the same as going for your family workout. Test a woman with a pregnancy test. Women, you know, take a while. And the men, basically, all the men are in one room, and the women are one behind the other.

Speaker 2: What you’re going to do now are some orthoneurological exercises. It may sound like we’re testing your fitness, but we’re not. If anything we ask of you hurts or if you feel dizzy, short of breath, things like that, relax. Doing so is not an obstacle, and we certainly don’t want you to leave the scene injured.

Diane Mahalko: If they are ineligible for a medical reason, services may choose to offer a waiver of that ineligibility, which is often the case. The ducks walk, that’s what everyone remembers, you know. Our pre-service people come in and they always, you know, tell applicants about walking the duck. My favorite part is finding applicants and when they say they’re qualified, you know, they’re very happy. They are calm, you know, and that makes it all worth it.

Success in any branch of the military depends on a good education. A high school diploma is highly desired. Candidates with a GED (General Education Development) certificate can enroll, but some jobs may limit their opportunities. It is very difficult to be a serious candidate without a high school diploma or an approved qualifying certificate.

For safety and security reasons, and to uphold the military’s high standards, all Military Entrance Examination Station (MEPS) applicants are required to complete a background check. Generally, felons or individuals with multiple convictions on their records are not eligible to join the military. However, each department has its own policy and, in some cases, may offer moral exemptions or felony exemptions:

Individuals convicted of crimes as adults or juveniles for crimes involving violence, domestic violence, illegal drugs, or sex will be denied.

Yes, we do biometric registration on all applicants when they first arrive at MEPS. Basically, we will collect their fingerprints. We use their first finger, which is usually their right hand. We will also do the back finger on their left hand. And then we’ll take a photo of them covering 20 different spots on their face. Once they are accepted into the database, all they have to do is show up at a station and get their fingerprint, which identifies them. It is also a security precaution because if someone tries to enter, if it is not that person, another finger will tell us that. So this will keep all applicants safe.

Well, once you’ve done that, you have to come and see the people in action, right? You need to be open and honest with them when they put you there.

Speaker 2: When you visit MEPS you will see that the biometric process is the first step. We will also process your fingerprints, revealing any involvement you may have had with law enforcement.

They will ask you question 14. They will ask you about speeding tickets and dealing with authorities. If you have any court cases open or closed, you need to make sure that anything you say to them is recorded. Are you okay? Do you understand that?
