FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. — The 304th Military Intelligence Battalion graduated 45 students, including National Guard, Reservists and international officers, from the Army’s Military Intelligence Corps Basic Leader Course (MIBOLC) during a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Sierra Vista on Dec. 1. 8.
Guest speaker, retired Colonel Bridget Rourke, highlighted several key qualities for those serving in military intelligence. He spoke to the graduates and told them three priorities to have as an officer: mission, people and yourself.
Rourke said all three priorities are important, but so is knowing the order in which to place them.

“Your mission is simple. You give your Soldiers purpose, direction and meaning, and then you execute them,” he said. “You have a great responsibility to care for others. You will live a life of sacrifice. You are here because you have a strong heart, a strong mind and a strong body.
A blessing, he says, that not everyone is lucky enough to have. “To whom much is given, much is expected,” but he also reminded them of the importance of taking care of themselves.
Rourke was not only the guest speaker, but she is also the mother of graduate 2nd Lt. Mary Armstrong.
Armstrong reported that during her time at BOLC, she has made lifelong friends and is eager to take the next steps in her career as a military intelligence officer.

“It was very important to have my mother as a guest speaker – and even more important that my classmates voted for her,” she said. “She’s been an inspiration to me and it’s exciting to see her be a part of my career. »
After leaving Fort Huachuca, Armstrong will be assigned to the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. She is excited to lead the Soldiers and put into practice everything she has learned so far in her career.
Students graduated to Veterans Memorial Park to help strengthen the ties between Fort Huachuca and the Sierra Vista community. Sierra Vista has been home to the US Intelligence Center since 1971 and has provided a space for both permanent members and students assigned to Fort Huachuca to become intelligence professionals equipped to meet the needs of our modern military.
Capt. Neil Hiegel, commander of C Co., 304th MI BN, Hiegel said the installation and downtown graduation had never been done before by his company.

MIBOLC is a 16-week professional military training course designed to integrate new lieutenants into the Military Intelligence Corps. To become a leader, students progress through four phases of training: common core, pre-deployment, deterrence/offense/defense, and integrated skills.
Upon graduation, each student is prepared to assume the duties and responsibilities of an intelligence officer at the battalion or brigade level and will then be able to join service members at military installations around the world.
Graduates received MOS 35A, All Source Intelligence Officer, the first of many steps they will take as a military intelligence professional. My name is 2LT Kevin Coleman. I graduated from John Carroll University in 2019. I was commissioned as an active duty military intelligence officer and recently graduated from MIBOLC (Military Intelligence Officer Basic Leadership Course) at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. The course lasts approximately 4.5 months, with 30 days of on-the-job training. The first two weeks of BOLC consist of common core, the basic characteristics that every soldier must possess. This includes shooting, land navigation, using grenades and the Night Infiltration Field (NIC). For those unfamiliar with NIC, it involves crawling under barbed wire while a machine gun is fired high above your head. I didn’t have to build the network card, but BOLCs are starting to implement them.

The majority of MIBOLC is classroom teaching, with 3 assignments and 4 tests. The tests are closed book and the article topics depend on the setting. The whole class is structured around a possible conflict zone in Eastern Europe called “Gorgas” which looks like Ukraine. Enemies of the script are the “Donovians”. In the story, the Donovians invade Gorgas and install a pro-Donovian government. NATO launches attack on Gorgas to restore pre-war international borders. The course begins with the learning of offensive and defensive operations and then proceeds to consolidate the acquired knowledge and then to stability operations. The course is structured around each of these different phases. I learned friendly and enemy doctrines, equipment and tactics. I also learned how to develop intelligence gathering plans and the different ways the military gathers information. To summarize the purpose of an MI officer, the job is to provide the commander with insight into what the enemy is doing and what he is capable of doing. This is done using the Military Decision Making Process, or MDMP, it helps develop action plans that the enemy can use.
MIBOLC teaches officers how to think critically and make assessments based on enemy reports, doctrine, and tactics. This helps identify biases a person may have and teaches cooperation. I met many interesting people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, etc. If I can recommend anything to cadets going to BOLC in the near future, it’s to go with an open mind and be humble. I was in a class with a ranger, a green beret, and veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have decades of experience between them, but everyone in the class was new to military intelligence. The officers who had the most difficulty in my class were the ones who thought they knew the answer to everything. Always ask questions and it’s okay if you don’t know the answer.
