The train was moving at an uncontrolled speed. The passenger was instructed to take his seat. Suddenly, the screeching sound of the brakes is followed by a gust of wind, and the eardrums of the lone rider explode. As a 2nd lieutenant, the train was my future. I was a passenger. Hi, my name is Candice Henley. I attended Officer Training School (OTS) for the United States Air Force. The original plan was for me to be commissioned in December, so I am now stationed at Langley AFB in Virginia. However, God had a different plan for me.
Officer Training Air Force Requirements
During my time at OTS, I learned that I had a great strategic mind, but also a very analytical mind. So I failed some academic tests and ended up in a different class. When I was told it was recycled, I felt like a part of my future had died. Then when I was told I was getting on the next flight, it was like a brief resurrection.

Between my time in the cleaning room or the reworked flight and actually going home, something told me I needed to do something else. Then when I landed on my new flight, I couldn’t seem to get anything done no matter what I did. I’m starting to realize that I’m not in the Air Force anymore. One night I called my family and found out that my mother was seriously ill and my sister had not come to school for the past few weeks. Because of this, I lost focus and failed my final academic exam. At this point, I abandoned my practice and immediately returned home to take care of my mother.
Before hearing from my family, I bought a plane ticket to go back to Alabama after Christmas break with the belief that I could actually make it. The ticket is for a round-trip flight arriving in Atlanta on the morning of January 6th. Since my sister’s school was on Christmas break and my dad was on vacation, I decided to go to Atlanta for a few days. friend
There I went to a church where the preacher, Bishop Eddie L. Long said something in his sermon that sticks with me to this day. His words: “All the decisions you’ve made, the decisions you’ve made or not made, add up to this moment.” As the words fell like stones on the surface of my mind in the stillness of thought, my vision was suddenly filled with images. Tired, I thought about my sister and how she would go to school. Then I thought about my mother and who would take care of her.
Although I don’t wear a uniform anymore, my goals are high. I am currently working part-time on research alongside writing novels and poetry, my mother is getting better and will soon walk again, and my sister is getting very good grades in school. I may not have graduated, but I am grateful to have positively impacted the lives of people in the classes of 04-02 and 04-03. When I was processed, everyone on my flight said “see you soon” instead of saying goodbye before leaving the room. I used to do it, and I still do, because “What’s the use of saying goodbye if the person doesn’t come back?” I believe that. I say “See you soon” to discourage her from meeting again.

Both of these offer a great way for a person to complete their bachelor’s degree while earning a commission. But what if you have a degree and want to get your commission? The Officer Training School (OTS) answers that question.
OTS, also known as Basic Officer Training School (BOTS), is an intensive 9-week program consisting of 4 phases:
Basic Officer Training, Academy Of Military Sciences Graduate Together > Maxwell Air Force Base > Display
Phase 1 – Introduction: Cadets learn basic Air Force customs and courtesies with an emphasis on physical training and discipline practices.
Phase 3 – Application: Cadets demonstrate the skills they have learned in areas such as leadership response courses and base defense training.
Does it take nine weeks of training versus four years to earn a commission in the zoo or AFROTC? Sounds like a good deal, right?

Us Air Force Officer Recruitment & Selection Overview
If you’re considering this route, keep a few things in mind. Other than bachelor’s degrees, OTS is the Air Force’s smallest commissioning source (17% of AF officers are OTS graduates) and typically only trains 120-150 specialized pilots per year. When applying for OTS, those who wish to participate in SUPT apply specifically for the rank officer position.
The Air Force uses the Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) to predict a person’s likelihood of successfully completing pilot training. AFOQT pilot score, TBAS score, and PCSM score ratio to total flight hours.
The Air Force Colonel Board reviews all applications and awards OSS slots for specific training goals. Those selected for SUPT have the luxury of knowing that a pilot slot is available before proceeding to OTS. 40-50% of those who get an OTS pilot slot have previously been drafted.
