Ota To Ot Bridge Programs – If you are an Occupational Therapist (OTA) and are thinking about becoming an Occupational Therapist (OTR), you first need to determine which OTA to OTR transition program is best for you.
There are many things to consider, including (but not limited to) cost, location, program flexibility (for a working COTA!), and program length.

To help you make this important decision, I wanted to put together a comprehensive list of accredited OTA and OTR communications programs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree to help you narrow it down a bit.

Each bridging program listed will include tuition, location, length of study, NBCOT pass rate (as of 2019) and other important information to help you make a decision.
And, as mentioned above, because many COTAs are non-bachelor degree holders, each of these graduate OT programs does not require a bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite before starting the program.

The 10 Best Online Master’s Of Occupational Therapy Graduate Schools In 2023
Type of study: Master’s program in occupational therapy full-time during the weekend. In-person meeting every third weekend with online classes every week. Meeting all year round. Two level II fieldwork is full-time.
Type of study: Blended online and on-site occupational therapy master’s program with face-to-face classes every other weekend. Two 12-week Level II Field Courses are full-time.
Length of study: 3.75 years, which includes a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation followed by a master’s degree in occupational therapy. 2.75 years for COTAs who already have a bachelor’s degree.
Cost: $15,237 per semester full-time for graduate programs and $10,175 per semester for undergraduate programs. In total, the program consists of 11 trimesters, with some trimesters consisting of only one course or field study.
Master Of Science In Occupational Therapy
Program Type: Primarily Online Master’s in Occupational Therapy with one permit per month on campus. Part-time full-time work at level II.
Type of study: Hybrid online and face-to-face Master’s in Occupational Therapy with face-to-face classes held every weekend. Level II Fieldwork is full-time.
Cost: $570 per credit hour, including fees. Estimate approximately $90,107 including 120 BS credit hours and 38 MS credit hours. Please contact the program for current numbers as these are estimates.
Type of program: Part-time evening master’s program in occupational therapy with face-to-face training twice a week. Options include a combined intermediate BS/MS program for COTAs without a bachelor’s degree, or an entry-level MSOT program for those who already have a bachelor’s degree.
Rehabilitation Science & Fitness: Middle Georgia State University
Cost: $27,650 per year (27 credits per year) excluding fees. Estimate around $68,000 since the third year is only 15 units. See more information on the program’s website.
Program type: Online and in-person full-time occupational therapy master’s program that meets every 3 weekends in person. Level II Fieldwork is full-time.
Duration of the course: two years for COTAs who already have a bachelor’s degree and three years for the combined BS/MOT course for COTAs without a bachelor’s degree.
Cost: $59,678 for a Masters in OT including fees. This does not include the cost of a bachelor’s degree for COTAs who must also earn it.
Ota Bridge Program
Program Type: Face-to-face online/in-person meetings every third weekend. Level II fieldwork is conducted in person.
Type of study: online / face-to-face Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. This bridging course is available online with face-to-face sessions over 5 weekends in a 10-week quarter. Two level II fieldwork is full-time.
Duration of the course: not specified directly. The program consists of 24 units of basic undergraduate courses and 51 units of OT master courses. The bridging program includes a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy followed by a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy.
Cost: Detailed tuition information is not available on their website (you must use their tuition calculator to get an estimate).

Program Type: Online MSOT Bridge Program with two personal days off every 8 weeks. Level II field work – face to face.
As you may have noticed, each master’s or doctoral program in occupational therapy requires two 12-week personal full-time (40 hours per week) level II fieldwork. This is required by AOTA and ACOTE standards for the program to be accredited.
Both level II field projects are usually done at the end of the program, but one can also be in the middle of the program depending on the curriculum. I wanted you to be aware of this full-time requirement because I hear from applicants who often wish for an entirely online option (which does not exist due to the need for this hands-on, in-person learning).
In this regard, I would like to note that regardless of which bridging program you choose, you will need to prepare for 24 weeks of full-time Level II fieldwork. Each program website will have a sample curriculum that should indicate when in the program they have their Level II fieldwork.

Since I see this so often, I wanted to compile the most common answers and thoughts for those of you who have this important question.
Ota To Ot Transition: Should You Make The Change?
The pros and cons of this post come from personal conversations as well as many online discussions from COTAs who are learning the option, COTAs who have converted to OTR, and COTAS who have chosen not to become OTR.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national average salary for a COTA is $61,730 per year. In comparison, occupational therapists (OTR) at the master’s or doctoral level earn an average of $85,570 per year (or $41.14 per hour) based on the average salary. Therefore, the OTR salary is about 43% higher on average.
Of course, the amount you receive as COTA or OTR may be higher or lower depending on your location, experience and setup.

New York State Occupational Therapy Association
Many facilities, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and schools, employ fewer COTAs or, in some cases, no COTAs at all. In some cities, it can be increasingly difficult to find clinical work as a COTA, and many have expressed this as their reason for going back to school to become an OTR.
As an OTR, you manage your patient’s treatment plan, treatment plan, discharge plan, and more. As a COTA, you follow the OTR treatment plan and may not have many creative treatment options based on the patient’s OTR goals.
This may seem obvious, but many COTAs who have transitioned to OTR have said that they really expanded their OT knowledge by going through the OT graduate program. If you are passionate about healthcare and helping patients on their therapeutic journey, you may find that it is your interest in this field that drives you to pursue an OT master’s degree.
One popular non-clinical opportunity is teaching. Many OT schools hire OTRs with a master’s or doctoral degree to become faculty.
