Physical Therapist Assistant Associate's Degree – The Physical Education Assistant program combines the general education curriculum with the theoretical and practical learning experiences required for a PTA education. The PTA program is a 1 + 1 format. Students must successfully complete 32 hours per week of eligible courses before applying to the PTA Program.

Applicants must successfully complete the following courses* with a minimum grade of “B” in each science course (BIOL 2064/L, Anatomy and Physiology I; BIOL 2074/L, Anatomy and Physiology II / Laboratory; and BIOL 2304/L, Kinesiology / Lab) AND a combined GPA of 2.75 or higher
* Changes to academic requirements must be approved by the PTA Program Director prior to application to the PTA Program.
TEAS The TEAS exam must be taken anytime before March 1 of the year in which the applicant hopes to enroll in the technical portion of the PTA course. Appointments must be made through the Testing and Training Center, Room 220 of the Training Center (TSC). The cost of this test is $55.00. Applicants must obtain acceptable scores in all areas of the exam (minimum score requirements are: Composite score 55; Reading 55). Students who do not successfully meet the minimum score requirements will be subject to Health’s remediation and probation policy. Applicants to the PTA program are allowed to take the TEAS three (4) times to receive a passing grade. Study activities are available in the Testing and Learning Center (free) for TEAS. Awards received within 18 months of application will be accepted.
A criminal background check is required if accepted into the PTA program. The background check costs $53.00 and is offered during the summer semester.
Differential Diagnosis For Physical Therapists Screening For Referral
Physical Therapy Observation Students must complete a total of eight (8) hours of observation in two (2) different physical therapy settings under the direction/supervision of a physical therapist or medical assistant or licensed authority. A physical therapy session should take place in a hospital or nursing home (long-term care). Other physical therapy settings may be in an intensive care unit, a rehabilitation unit, a pediatric unit, or an outpatient setting. Applicants working as a technician/physician assistant may have a supervisor (PT/PTA) complete one of the observation forms. The test must have been completed within the previous two (2) years and must be submitted by March 1 of the year in which the student is applying to the PTA program. The necessary documents to document these observations are attached to the application. Students who complete the pre-application review will receive appropriate forms from the PTA Program offices.
Applicants may apply at the PTA offices (rooms 250 and 252 Health Science Center) on the first day of the spring semester after completing coursework or enrolling in required coursework.
Complete Application: A completed application includes demographic information, information about individuals to complete recommendation forms, education history, work history, personal information, verification of forms, applicant signature and signature submission for background check.
Transcripts from Other Colleges: Southern Arkansas Community College must obtain official transcripts from all colleges from which the applicant earned college credit. Applicants must coordinate with the Office of Enrollment Services to receive this information in a timely manner. (Note: some colleges charge a fee for this service.)

Recommendation Form: There are three (3) recommendation forms in the PTA application package. Applicants must fill out their name and ID # on the form before submitting one of these forms to three people. Recommendations from relatives/relatives are not accepted. Applicants are encouraged to seek recommendations from employers/supervisors, college instructors, or PTs/PTAs who can demonstrate the applicant’s maturity, communication skills, and integrity. Letters of recommendation must be received by March 1. It is important that recommendation forms be sent directly to the PTA Program (recommendation forms submitted by applicants must be in a sealed envelope, signed and stamped by the advisor).
The PTA program is limited to 20 students per year. Students who are not enrolled in the upcoming class are encouraged to reapply for the next PTA class.

Summer 2016 The Physical Therapy Program Advisory Committee, made up of administrators, physical therapist managers, and clinical assistant therapists, was originally established in 1997. The committee monitors, evaluates and advises the PTA and the College program in all areas of education. curriculum, admissions, retention, policy and evaluation.
