Active duty is similar to full-time civilian employment. They have their own tariffs and a specific role within your entity. The length of service can be between 2 and 6 years. Active members fall into two general categories: enlisted personnel and officers.
Enlisted Sailors form the backbone of the Navy, with each member having their own specialty training and specific role within their unit. Officers are the leaders of the Navy. They guide the sailors involved and provide the know-how and expertise to get the job done. Active service typically lasts from 2 to 6 years. A deployment can last anywhere from a few weeks to six months, but the duration varies depending on ship size and mission. The ships are installed every 18-24 months.

Navy ROTC – The Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) allows students to apply for leadership and elective courses at colleges and universities. Upon graduation, ROTC cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants. See the ROTC section of this article for more details.
Direct Commissioning – Individuals with certain special skills and abilities may be eligible for direct commission to the officership. This typically includes areas such as law and medicine. Entry into the Navy in this manner requires attendance at the Direct Commission Officers Induction Course, a two-week program designed to train newly commissioned officers.
Officer Candidate School – The Navy Officer Candidate School offers four-year degree holders an opportunity to earn a commission. This 12-week course prepares candidates physically and mentally. However, candidates must pass it before becoming an officer.
United States Naval Academy – The Naval Academy accepts high school graduates and provides the education and training necessary to become officers upon graduation. Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy.

Service in the Naval Reserve is similar to part-time work. You can live where you want, focus on your civilian career, and stay close to your family. Navy reservists are required to serve at least one weekend per month and two weeks per year. These requirements may include flexible drilling options with an expanded mission capacity. Reserve operations range from flying an F/A-18 at the weekend to attending to the medical needs of a deployed child sailor to renovating a naval base.
The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is an undergraduate and graduate elective that provides leadership training. It is available at many colleges and universities across the country and offers merit-based scholarships that can cover full tuition and open educational opportunities.
