Slater Heglin, president of FHSU’s SHRM, explains that the Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapter is an organization designed to develop students professionally.

“Through our relationship with National SHRM, we can gain real-world experience while connecting with people all over the world. If our members choose to affiliate with National SHRM, they will have access to a network of resources to assist their work,” Heglin said. “On an annual basis, we organize seminars, organize educational tours and visit organizations, and develop our members by providing them with leadership opportunities.”

SHRM Public Affairs Specialist Jade Artzer adds to Heglin’s statement by talking about the purpose of the eight-year major at FHSU.

“The purpose of SHRM is to help individuals learn about Human Resources (HR) and the business world. We focus on preparing our students for the ‘real world,’” said Artzer.

Artzer goes on to mention that although there are no actual requirements that a student at FHSU must meet to attend SHRM, it is certainly helpful for students who are interested in the business world or want to learn what to expect in -their future workplace. Some of the benefits include resume workshops, HR panels, networking events, guest speakers and educational tours, he said.

“When students attend SHRM at FHSU, they have the opportunity to learn from HR professionals about how to apply for jobs, tips and tricks for entering the job market, hiring and firing practices, and what HR professionals look for in their employees.” Heglin said. “In addition, SHRM at FHSU Department offers two trips per year, which provides students with the opportunity to network with industry professionals, see different practices of HR departments in different industries , and see what the world has to offer outside of Hays.”

Heglin then describes the personal accomplishments he has made through SHRM and the power of the business networking site LinkedIn.

“During my time at FHSU, I was shadowing the CEO of Don Hattan Dealerships in the Wichita area,” he said. “He owns two businesses and I have always admired his leadership style, talent development initiatives and his drive for success. “I reached out to him via LinkedIn and surprisingly he responded.”

In Fall 2021, SHRM students at FHSU had the opportunity to tour the Park City dealership and learn about employee development initiatives at Don Hattan Dealers, thanks to the initial connection of Heglin.

Heglin goes on to describe how this meeting created a working relationship between FHSU students and Don Hattan Dealerships.

“The HR Manager at Don Hattan Dealerships has since reached out to our FHSU students about job opportunities available at the dealerships,” he said.

Artzer takes the lesson of the importance of having a strong LinkedIn profile a step further by emphasizing the importance of being an engaged student at FHSU.

“Getting involved helps make college fun for students,” he said. “The organizations and clubs you join in college create lifelong friendships and teach you things you wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t joined, like networking skills.”

Heglin expands on Artzer’s statement, saying that being on the FHSU campus is what allows the student to have that experience.

“As I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in various organizations around campus, I’ve made friends from all walks of life, grown as a leader, and continued my servant leadership journey,” Heglin said. “I can truly say that being on the FHSU campus builds character, brings joy, and pays off to those who work for us.”

Heglin wants everyone to know that the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) at FHSU is not just for HR majors and is an extremely inclusive and diverse group.

“SHRM at FHSU’s student chapter is an organization for all majors,” he said. “We currently major in history, education, agriculture, marketing, leadership, business and more participation in SHRM. Whatever our name, we are committed to ensuring that our department members are informed about hiring practices that will help them land a job after graduation. “With a network of professionals from the Western Kansas Human Resource Management Association (WKHRMA), our professional development opportunities are extremely comprehensive.”

A year after a messy separation, the HR industry’s largest membership association and its largest provider of professional identity appear to be on the mend, although they’re still not on speaking terms.

The Society for Human Resource Management, with 275,000 members, and the HR Certification Institute, with 145,000 certification holders, ended their affiliation in May 2014 due to controversial circumstances.

This separation allows SHRM to create its own SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM-Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credentials to compete with HRCI’s Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (PHR). (SPHR) and Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) certifications, ending a nearly forty-year partnership dating back to 1976. Since then, both organizations have been busy charting an independent path forward.

Speaking at a June 28 press conference during SHRM’s 2015 annual conference in Las Vegas, Alexander Alonso, SHRM’s vice president of research examinations and certification, called the process so far as “a great success.”

More than 46,000 people have signed up for the community certification path since SHRM began accepting applications in January, while several thousand more have completed the certification exam, he said. SHRM is in the process of applying for accreditation of its new certifications through the National Commission of Certification Agencies, a review process that could take up to a year.

As proof of acceptance by the business community, Alonso named AutoZone Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. He said employers like to use the competency model that forms the basis of SHRM certifications in their HR development practices.

SHRM also established the 11-member SHRM Certification Commission, chaired by HR heavyweight Wayne Cascio, a professor of management at the University of Colorado Denver and former president of the SHRM Foundation, to oversee the development of the certification exam, eligibility requirements and recertification.

Cascio compared achieving SHRM certification to obtaining a driver’s license while speaking at the same media briefing. Applicants must know the rules of the road but
