Step To Becoming A Police Officer – Brunswick County, N.C. () – Cara Kiskaden said Sunday, June 11, started out as an ordinary day for her family, including her husband and 19-month-old daughter.

Kiskaden describes the scariest moment of her life: when her 19-month-old daughter Josie stopped breathing and she didn’t know what was wrong.

Kiskaden said her parents were at her house and everything was normal until her father, Josie, was sleeping and noticed something was wrong.

“When we ran into [the living room] to check and find out [what was wrong]. I think my husband called me, Kiskaden said. “My mom picked up the phone and left the phone [on the kitchen table] when she realized something was wrong. So you know, while this was all going on, [my husband] was on the line in [another] room listening to what was going on. And he ate beside the lion above the road.”

“She said her daughter wasn’t breathing. And at that moment, I knew it wasn’t going anywhere. So I told him to get in my truck,” Officer Benson said.

When Officer Benson drove him home in his personal vehicle rather than a patrol car, Officer Tyler McElroy heard the call on the radio. Even though McElroy’s shift was over, he was close and knew he had to respond.

“I have two kids that have had issues from the beginning, so I knew this could be a difficult situation,” Officer McElroy said.

Shortly after arriving at the Kiskadens’ home, little Josie started breathing again. But Officer McElroy continued to check on Josie until her father and emergency services arrived.

“So a lot of times just being there in the moment helped the family and everything,” Officer McElroy said.

Josie was eventually taken to the hospital to be examined by doctors. He had a fever of 103 degrees, so he took medicine and returned home a few hours later, unresponsive to what had caused the seizure.

Kiskeden says her family is still shaken by their daughter’s seizure, but Officers Benson and McElroy did a lot to calm them down and make sure everyone was OK.

“The timing was incredible. People were where they needed to be, an officer who was so close so fast. Sure, it was only hours, but minutes,” Kiskaden said. “They’re good people and it makes us feel good knowing we’re in a place where these officers are, they’re just selfless and I can’t say enough good things about them.” I really can’t. We are very grateful. “

Joss has several doctor’s appointments in the coming weeks to hopefully get some answers to the problem. For now, the mother says she is paying more attention to her daughter so that this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.
