I, like many others, became an analyst without formal qualifications in information technology. I earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice when I was hired by Segue and earned an MBA in finance soon after. The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) offers three professional business analysis certifications: Certificate of Attendance in Business Analysis™ (ECBA™), Certification of Competence in Business Analysis (CCBA®), and Certification of Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®). I prepared for the certification exam by reading the Business Analyst Knowledge Book (BABOK) and taking exam preparation courses. I also took the online practice test.

The analyst’s work also involves a lot of talking, so good communication skills are essential. Non-existent or undecided stakeholders can be the most challenging part of requirements gathering. Sometimes you will be given access to an application and told to “improve” it with minimal input from stakeholders about what is currently “bad” about it. Don’t be afraid to ask “why?” And not just “how?” You’ll find that sometimes people do things just because that’s the way they do it or the way they’ve been taught, but it’s not a value-added activity.
