Navy Moving Ahead With Unprecedented Review Of Jag Corps
Asked why a judge advocate in the Army should hold the prestigious ESB title, he said, “The motto of the JAG Corps is “Soldier first, always a lawyer” and I wonder what that means. it is not Just a great phrase.”
ESB is designed to improve lethality, recognize Soldier warfighting skills, and improve individual, unit, and overall Army readiness. The ESB is equivalent to the Infantry Specialist Badge and Specialist Field Medical Badge, but for all other military occupational specialties in the Army.
ESB training and testing is conducted in challenging, mission-oriented, and realistic environments. Those in the infantry, special forces, and medical profession management fields are not eligible for ESB.

Stewart attended Georgia State University in his hometown of Atlanta with the intention of becoming a philosophy professor. He was a good writer, loved reading and analytical thinking, but did not think much of a career in law until a teacher suggested he study law.
He received his law degree from the University of Illinois in 2008, where he interviewed with a JAG Corps field screener. Stewart, who has been in the corps for 12½ years, has a vision for the future
“Not only will I find a meaningful way to apply my legal education, but I will be able to serve my country, which I always felt I would do one day,” he said. “I found it very exciting, and I really enjoyed having the opportunity to study on the court for a year after I graduated from law school.”

Upon acceptance, judge advocates undergo a six-week direct-to-order course in leadership skills and techniques at Fort Benning, Georgia. This was followed by 10½ weeks of JAG Corps and legal training at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Stewart and Flores worked as paralegals, Stewart in Benning in 2009 and Flores in 2016 for the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
