UTICA, N.Y. – Two new faces of the New York National Guard have arrived at the first training unit this year. Plus a unique addition to the uniform: the Ranger tab.

PFC Jason Chun, 20, of Syracuse, and Brandon Snyder, 23, of Livonia, NY, both completed a challenging 61-day course before joining the 2nd Battalion, Infantry Regiment. The 108th, based in Utica, New York, was part of the 27th Battalion, Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Ranger School emphasizes close-quarters combat and direct fire. Training focuses on tactics and small unit leadership. The candidate performs ambush and reconnaissance missions in three phases. Includes mountain and swamp mission environments.

“The Ranger Course is a premier leadership school,” according to Capt. James Sturges, commander of Alpha Company at the National Guard Warrior Training Center at Fort Benning, Georgia.

They get there through the Ranger Leaders Initiative, or RTLI for short. New Soldiers who excel in training are identified and given the opportunity to access Ranger School immediately after their single-station unit training.

Neither of them knew that the opportunity would come in their first year of military service.

“It was a real surprise to me. I never thought I would get an opportunity like this,” Snyder said.

“I’ve wanted to go to Ranger School since middle school,” Jun said in December 2019 during his graduation ceremony. “That’s the challenge. It is the ability to find out who you really are and what you were born for.”

Snyder, who graduated in August 2020, agreed that as a Ranger School recruit was the highest training goal he had.

“It was like my dream was to go to Ranger School and I remember asking recruiters about it,” he said.

“I get that you’re going to sleep and have no food,” says Jun. I wanted to put myself in that situation to see if it really did. So who am I? And I learned a lot of lessons” .

The RTLI program searches for applicants at Fort Benning, Georgia, and identifies National Guard soldiers with the best potential to succeed in the Ranger program.

“I didn’t even know about the program until the day officials said they were giving me the opportunity to continue my eight-week fast,” Snyder said of his options.

Lieutenant Gabriel Musser, an official in charge of the RTLI, said the process started the day the students arrived for basic training. It gives an overview of the Ranger School.

Snyder admits that the training and preparation at the Warrior Training Center helped him succeed in the course.

Col. Michael A. Scarpella, commander of the Air and Reconnaissance Training Corps at Fort Benning, explained that sending new personnel to Ranger School is unusual.

“It is not unusual for Soldiers to transition directly from their first training in the Army to Ranger School,” Scarpalla said.

“Soldiers typically spend about one or two years in their unit. and gain practical experience as a member of the fire service and beyond,” he said.

Snyder said he knows his experience is unique. and would like to pass it on to conscripts and other soldiers in his unit

“Come practice and work hard and anything is possible,” he said, “if I know what I have to do to participate. I will prepare better And that is what I hope to be able to pass on to others.”

“I really enjoyed being a regular Joe,” Chun said while training with his company. and shared his lessons and experiences as a scout with his fellow soldiers. “I take responsibility with pride,” he said.
