CV5 Ward is a native of Tabor City, North Carolina and currently resides on his farm in Culleoka, Tennessee with his wife of twenty-four years, Jennifer. Active Duty Army in November 1991. He attended basic combat training, then officer candidate school, and then flight school.

His first assignment was to the 18th Airborne Corps, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina as a UH-1 (HUEI) and UH-60 (Black) pilot. He was then assigned to the 2nd Battalion (Assault) of the 1st Airborne Brigade in Kutterbach, Germany, where he served as an operations officer and pilot instructor. During this tour, he was deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina in support of IFOR/SFOR (1995-1996) and in Kosovo in support of KFOR (1999-2000).
Shumway was then assigned to the 2nd Battalion (Attack), 10th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), Ft. Drum, New York where he worked as the company’s quality officer. During this tour, he was deployed to Kuwait for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in 2003.
In 2004, he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard, full-time (AGR), at Army Air Training Center East, Ft. Indiantown Gap. He has served as an instructor for: UH-60 pilot qualification, instrument flight examiner preparation and pre-commissioned airman training courses.
In 2005, Shumway transferred to the New York Army National Guard as a full-time Army technician, flight instructor. He held several positions in Latham and Ronkonkoma, New York with the 3rd Battalion (Assault), 142nd Airborne Regiment. His assignments there were: Company Security Officer, Company Certification Officer and Battalion Certification Officer. During that time he was deployed to Iraq for the OIF from 2008 to 2009.

In 2013, he was assigned to HHC 42nd CAB as Chief Aviation Gunner and later promoted to CV5. He was deployed to Kuwait (2013-2014) for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) where he worked as the Airfield Manager for Udai Army Airfield. In 2015, he was selected as the first warrant officer of the 42nd CAB Command. In 2021, he became a CAB Certification Officer.
He is a 1990 graduate of Virginia Tech (AS) and a 2017 graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where he earned a master’s degree in professional aeronautics. He graduated from the military: Senior Staff Warrant Officer Course, Warrant Officer Course, Basic and Advanced Air Warrant Officer Course. His flying courses include: Rotary Wing Initial Entry (UH-1), UH-60A/L/M & UH-72 Qualifications, UH-60 & UH-72 Instructor Pilot, Instrument Examiner, Electronic Warfare Officer, Aviation Security Officer and Master Aviation Gunner.
