What Is The Role Of An Assistant Principal – The school year is almost over. I have to say that this is a very interesting school year. What Is The Role Of An Assistant Principal
As a teacher, I felt that I played different roles for the students. It was important to me that students feel at home when they walk into my classroom. You never know what a student will take home outside of your class, and one of the most positive and best things that should happen to them at school every day is to feel accepted. to them, support and love. As an advanced studies major I felt like a flight attendant when I moved into an instructional support role. I was there to guide others to where they wanted or wanted to grow. I trusted other people with their careers, but I was there to encourage them and make them better at their craft. Now as an administrator I feel like I have a thousand questions thrown at me at any given time of the day, and the only thing people are looking for is that I have the answer. So, how did I get away with this because I really don’t know all the answers?

I was real, confident in knowing who I was and not afraid to be myself. I have met many other educators who move into administrative roles and suddenly they change. I never understood why. As a teacher and teaching assistant, I trusted trusted administrators the most.
You don’t know all the answers and others do. Now, that doesn’t mean you don’t take the time to find the answer, because no one understands that you’re not doing that part. But answering a question I don’t know is not a weakness. Instead, it’s a sign that you’re human, and that’s understandable.
I didn’t want to make promises I could never keep. If I can’t do it, I’ll be honest. But if you’re going to do something, do it.
Know the strengths and weaknesses of faculty and staff and capitalize on their strengths. By doing this you are actually helping them develop those weaknesses into strengths. You can’t do everything by yourself and part of your role as a manager is to build leaders. If you’re doing it all, how do you get future leaders to keep the ship running smoothly for students?

Know your purpose. I’ll say it one more time. Know your purpose. Take the time to understand your purpose in whatever you do and that will lead you to your career. My personal purpose is to ensure that every child has a learning experience that prepares them for their future endeavors and I believe in developing leaders to achieve this.
My first year as assistant principal was great. Because I understood why I got into this profession. This post I never thought to touch with a fine tooth comb, but when I realized why it leads me here. I never had a day where I questioned why I was doing what I was doing. Instead I question how I can improve so that I can do my best to develop both student leaders and teacher leaders.
