Start exploring the world beyond the mobile phone, , the ultimate mobile knowledge resource, ensuring you stay informed, informed and satisfied. Hello, my name is Odile Rourd. Ever since I started reading Greek mythology as a child, I have been interested in archeology and understanding ancient cultures. I have been working as a professional archaeologist for many years and I look forward to answering some of your questions about archaeology. I graduated from York University and worked in excavations in France, Ireland and of course England. I helped train students in archeology at a Silk Road fortress in Kazakhstan! I will hear from you soon. Ask Odile a question…

Hi Phil, I really want to study archeology and I am choosing my subjects to study in high school. Do you have any suggestions? By Brad, (age 13)

Dear Phil, My daughter Hannah in Year 9 is considering archeology as a career. Besides history, what other GCSEs does she need to take? Joanna, from Hannah’s mother

You’ve both asked the same question, so if that’s okay I’ll direct my answer to both of you.

What And How To Choose A Subject Combination?

You’d think history would be an obvious choice, but a thorough understanding of 20th-century European politics won’t help you with a Bronze Age settlement site, for example. That said, I think it’s this interest in history that brings most people into archaeology, and obviously we often excavate sites that fall into historical periods, so overall history is a good place to start.

Now, everything archaeologists do is about communication, and the main way we do that is through the written word. I think you’d be surprised how much writing an archaeologist has to do, even from scratch. We start by writing reference sheets and site logs to record what we dig and make these written records or records. It is imperative that these records are accurate, clear and concise so that a written report of the excavation can be prepared. Also, as you progress in the profession, you can be a site report writer and perhaps even write up a site for publication in a suitable archaeological journal. So, I would suggest you to take up English as a subject.

Now, as I’m sure you know, archeology is an interdisciplinary subject based on many scientific disciplines. So I would suggest that if you want to specialize in your career (archaeology-osteology, archaeology, archeology-environment, archaeological dating, etc.) then studying science is a good idea.

Finally, it might be an idea to study physical geography. This can help because understanding the physical geological processes by which a site is incorporated into the archaeological record is often important in determining how best to excavate the site.

Become An Anaesthetist

For myself Archeology (I was very lucky that it was offered as a subject where I trained), English, Mathematics, Ecology and Human Biology.

I would add that choosing your courses is an important step in your education and you commit to studying them for several years. For that, I would say make sure you choose subjects that interest you!

Dive deeper into our blog by clicking on one of the words above or search using this box. We are often asked by prospective university students which A Level subjects they should choose to pursue a particular career.

In this post, we aim to clear up any confusion or uncertainty about which subjects to study and ensure you are on the right track to a university degree that will open doors to your business.

How To Become An Art Teacher (plus Salary And Job Info)

If you are applying for a veterinary course, you will normally be asked for the following A level subjects:

There are currently 7 universities in England and two in Scotland where you can study veterinary science and they are all looking for good GCSE performance in Maths, Science and English.

Each medical school in the UK sets its own entry requirements for its degree programme, but many will demand A-levels in Chemistry and Biology as a minimum.

Some universities may also ask for either math or physics, though it’s best to take one.

What Degree Do You Need For Human Resources Careers?

Taking an essay-based subject like history as a fourth course will show you can write well and make clear, structured arguments.

Again, each university will have its own entry requirements, but many will ask for at least an A level in science.

Biology will certainly come in handy here, as will chemistry. However, if you find chemistry difficult or you don’t like it and the universities you’re applying to don’t ask for it, take another course.

The level required for this occupation may depend on whether you want to become a primary or secondary teacher.

Either way, you’ll usually need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English, Maths and Science) and 2 A Levels to get onto a university teaching course.

A wide range of A-level subjects are accepted by universities, even if you know what you want to study, e.g. History, it is definitely a good idea to deal with this topic, as well as another one that might be equally useful, e.g. English literature.

You also need to think about the path you want to take into teaching – are you going to apply for a 4 year Bachelor of Education? Or study a degree in a particular subject and take a 1 year PGCE course?

Please take the time to research each pathway carefully before making your final A-level subject choices, as entry requirements may vary.

What Marks Do I Need To Pass Matric?

Most universities require applicants to have at least A-level biology, although some may accept physical education as an option.

While different career paths require different A-level courses, it’s important to remember that whatever you’re interested in doing in the future, check the minimum requirements at each university you’re considering applying to.

Don’t think that all universities only require a certain A-level to get into a course and end up cutting yourself off from your dream career.

Do you have questions about which A Level courses to choose for a particular career? Or some general comments on my post? Put them down!

What To Expect In Medical School

Having gone to school in 2002 and applied to university myself, I know how difficult it can be to make the right choice about your educational journey, especially when you’re not sure where you want to live in the future.
